CITCM College Faculty Bios


  • Dr. Cheng TCMD, MD (China), PhD, RAc.

    Dr. Cheng earned her Bachelor’s Degree in TCM and Western Medicine in 1983 from the Hunan College of TCM, China. She did further study at Tianjin College of TCM, China culminating in 1987 with a Master’s Degree in Medicine and Acupuncture. In 1990, she received her Ph.D in Medicine from the Chengdu College of TCM, China with a specialty in Acupuncture and Chronomedicine.

    Dr. Cheng has over 20 years of clinical experience as a physician, herbalist and acupuncturist. She has been a professor at several colleges as well as instructing foreign students in China. She has translated several publications and is a published author of several TCM works. She is currently the Director of the BodyMind Synergy Health Centre, a member of several professional association boards and Vice-President for the Alberta Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors.

    Dr. Cheng is an active participant in the process of regulating TCM in Alberta. She also teaches courses on TCM to medical professionals and offers public education workshops on TCM. In September 2004, her long-time dream of opening a school of TCM was realized with the opening of CITCM, which she is proud to be the director of.

    Dr. Lanre Salami, MBBS, RMT

    Dr. Salami is a medical graduate and massage therapist practicing since 1994. Dr. Salami has had a positive influence on the development of orthopaedic application of massage therapy as a complementary modality along with allopathic medicine. He is involved in massage training and curriculum development of some of the massage schools and associations in the province. His background in orthopedic medicine provides a comprehensive approach to soft tissue dysfunction assessment and treatment.

    He has been a guest speaker in a variety of non-invasive technique application in chronic pain management, physiology seminar presentations involving soft tissue manipulative techniques, massage management in diabetics, TMJ and other fascial disorders. He has been involved with therapeutic massage training both in and out of the province. He was an active participant in the design and implementation of the first psychometrically validated evaluating exam for Massage training in the province.

    In addition, Dr. Salami is currently a senior instructor at Centre for Complementary Health Education, Mount Royal University, Calgary, in massage therapy training and maintains his therapeutic massage clinic in Calgary, Alberta.

    Dr. Juan “Ivy” Wang, TCMD, MSc.TCM, R.Ac.

    Dr. Wang received her Master’s Degree of TCM from the Chengdu University of TCM in China. Dr. Wang has specialized in using acupuncture and moxibustion to treat gynecological and pain syndrome such as infertility, premature ovarian failure, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrheal, PMS, menopause, arthritis, herniated discs and frozen shoulder.

    She has followed two very famous specialists for a period of two years in China. One is a professor in gynecology and the other, a specialist in using the ancient traditional acupuncture needling methods to treat stubborn diseases.

    Dr. Laureen Macintosh, DTCM, RAc., RMT

    Laureen graduated as a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2014, and is also a Registered Acupuncturist. She has a Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics from Guelph University. She is also a Registered Massage Therapist with 2200 hours of training and has been in practice since 2003.

    A firm believer in lifelong education, Laureen has supplemented her massage education with specialized courses in reflexology (both Western and Thai styles), Shiatsu and cupping therapy.

    Dr. Romana Iqbal, MD (Pakistan)

    Dr. Romana Iqbal earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (M.B.B.S) in 1998 from Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore, Pakistan. She further did her post graduation in the specialty of Obstetrics & Gynecology after four years of residency training. She attained her member ship degree in 2005 ,(MCPS) and In 2009 she attained her fellowship degree (FCPS) from the College of Physician and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).

    Dr. Iqbal has over 12 years of clinical and teaching experience. She worked as senior registrar in the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Federal Government Polyclinic Post graduate Medical Institute Islamabad, Pakistan. During her job at postgraduate institute she also attained experience in teaching postgraduate, undergraduate and paramedical students. To her credit she has many publications and she was also member of many case study programs conducted in the department. Publication for her fellowship degree was “complications during second stage of labour in adolescent pregnancy”.

    During her career she was involved in facilitating and conducting seminars and workshops with JICA, WHO and USAID in the rural and urban areas of Islamabad and AJK, Pakistan.

    Dr. Parveen Inayat, MD (Pakistan)

    Dr. Parveen Inayat graduated from King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan with a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery. After doing her US accreditation, she spent many successful years of family practice with special interest in diagnostic imaging and internal medicine. Settled in the beautiful city of Calgary, Parveen has been engaged in teaching allied health care programs like medical office assistants, unit clerks, massage therapy and pharmacy technicians for more than a decade.

    In 2003, Parveen completed a diploma program in business computers and office accounting. She is certified in MS Word 2007 and 2010 and very proficient in all other office applications. In 2011, she completed a one-year program in Anatomy & Physiology from the University of Athabasca and obtained A+ grade.

    Dr. Huma Shahzad

    I was a Medical Doctor in Pakistan from 1999 to 2013. I worked in intensive care unit and other medical care units for several years before I worked intensively with Unicef, USAID and WHO as Facilitator Trainings for various health and medical related projects. I moved to Canada in 2013 and worked as a Medical Instructor at Reeves College and Evergreen College in Calgary. I also did volunteering work with CIWA (Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association) for Breast Health program in 2013.

    I completed First Aid & CPR instructor course with Red Cross and started working as a Part time First Aid & CPR Instructor since April 2015 with Titan Health & Safety Calgary. In September 2015, I joined CITCM Faculty member as one of the instructors for massage program.

    Dr. Gayle Maguire

    Years of teaching experience: 10 | Courses: Western Nutrition, Ethics & Communications 1, 2, 3

    Dr. Maguire has been practicing naturopathic medicine in Calgary since 2006, with a primary focus in women’s health and pediatrics. She uses primarily nutrition and TCM, and has advanced training in intravenous therapy, prolotherapy, ozone therapy, & vitamin injections. When not indoors doing the job she loves, she can be found on a soccer pitch with her daughters.

    Dr. Janice Patterson

    Years of teaching experience: 2 | Courses: Orthopedic 1, 2 and 3

    Prior to receiving an education in Traditional Chinese medicine, Janice worked in various capacities in conventional health care. She was initially trained as a Kinesiologist and worked extensively in spinal rehabilitation. She later received her Masters degree in Health Sciences and worked for Alberta Health Services as an educator in schools, hospitals and local communities. With her background in Kinesiology and lifelong passion for sport Janice specializes in musculo-skeletal disorders and teaches orthopedic courses at CITCM. When not practicing Chinese medicine Janice is involved in cross country and track running, as well as mountain biking, hiking and skiing with her husband and 3 children.

    Dr. Melissa Wecker

    Melissa is a registered Acupuncturist and a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She earned her Masters of Science (MSc) in business management from Lancaster University in the UK in 2007. After working for a charitable organization writing funding proposals for projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she decided to change careers and pursued her studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

    Since graduating in 2013 she has been practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture in a private practice in Calgary ever since.

    Kristi-Lynn Mitchell, RMT

    Kristi-Lynn Mitchell graduated top of her class from the Mount Royal University Massage Therapy program in 2007 and has advanced credits in a university health science degree program. Since that time, she has studied and practiced orthopedic massage under the direction of Dr. Lanre Salami. She has 7 years experience teaching orthopedic assessment and advanced massage techniques. Kristi-Lynn has a successful practice at Orthopaedic Massage Consultants, is the acting registrar and secondary instructor for “The Orthopaedic Approach for Massage Therapists”, and currently teaches at The Canadian institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine.

    Amber Bridges, RMT

    Amber Bridges graduated from a 2200 hour massage program and has 20 years of experience in a clinical environment as a registered massage therapist. She is a member of the NHPC and is involved in their massage training and curriculum development programs. Amber continually strives to learn new techniques and advance her medical knowledge in the field. She has taken courses of interest such as equine/animal massage, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) techniques, pre/post cancer techniques, Thai massage, nerve mobilization, training in whiplash and upper extremity musculature disorders.

    Amber currently runs her own practice at the Massage Centre in NE Calgary. In her spare time, she enjoys keeping herself healthy by regularly working out, running and playing ringette where she volunteers as Vice President of the Women’s Ringette Association Board. She also enjoys cooking and spending time with family and friends.

    Dr. Bairu Wang, DTCM

    Dr Bairu Wang earned her Acupuncture Bachelor Degree in Guiyang College of TCM in China. She was then working in Chinese hospital for 6 years from 2010-2016 which later granted her a Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor in 2012. The huge population in China gave her the opportunity to see and treat 40-60 patients a day that contribute to her experience and skills tremendously. Other than Acupuncture and TCM, Dr Wang is also trained in Tui Na massage. The patient’s recovery and smile are the best rewards for her work.

    She hopes to pass on her knowledge and experience to the future TCM Doctors and Acupuncturist at CITCM!

    Kathy Traptow, B.P.H.E., B.Ed.,R.Ac.

    Kathy Traptow is a very talented graduate of the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine who began instructing at the Institute during this past year. Kathy has a very wide ranging background that has three very consistent themes; sports, health education, and healing. Her athletic background is immense but has culminated with her participating in competitive rowing (where she received a provincial silver medal), basketball, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, and running which allowed her to compete in several marathons including the Honolulu marathon. These activities and a competitive spirit lead her to pursue a Bachelor degree in Physical and Health Education which she later furthered with a Bachelor degree in Education. Applying her passion to help and educate people lead Kathy to gain experience teaching, working as an exercise physiologist for a breast cancer research trial and as a health care facilitator working for the Calgary Board of Education.

    Kathy’s path towards learning and educating, however, had only just begun. She wanted to educate and to heal utilizing hands on approach to make a difference in promoting positive change in a person’s health. Recognizing the benefits of acupuncture and TCM from her exposure to healing from sport injuries that she sustained she began studying acupuncture and herbal medicine at the CITCM. After completing her training she has taken a great interest in furthering her acupuncture career by specializing in sports medicine and instructing at the CITCM where she is a very welcome addition to the staff.

    Dr. Allan Fradsham, DTCM, R.Ac.

    Dr. Allan Fradsham holds a degree as a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine from The Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences. He graduated in 2006 and has been working full time as a TCM practitioner ever since.

    Dr. Fradsham runs a full general practice treating most disorders but has a special interest in physical injury and pain disorders. Dr. Fradsham has been teaching since 2009, and was one of the primary instructors at the International Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Ottawa Ontario until he moved to Alberta. Dr. Fradsham has also spoken to and taught the medical students at The University of Ottawa on a yearly basis since 2010, as part of an Integrated Medicine lecture series.

    When not in the clinic, Dr. Fradsham spends his time with his his family and his many outdoor pursuits.

  • Shawn deGreeve, MA Marketing, B. Mgt. Degree

    Shawn has years of business experience from running a family business to developing Marketing and Communication strategies.
Shawn is an expert in developing niche BRANDING for small and medium business and developing the processes to be successful. 
He currently collaborates with businesses to innovate and improve cash flows. He enjoys spending quality time with his family and likes travel and continuous learning. Shawn’s credentials include BA Marketing, B. Mgt. Degree with a social responsibility minor, and is a MBA candidate.

    Dr. Craig Young, DDS

    Craig is a general dentist with a special interest in integrated healthcare, chronic pain, post trauma rehabilitation, headache, sleep disordered breathing, and total health and wellness.

    Craig graduated from the University of Alberta Dental program in 1987, and from the University of Alberta Medical Acupuncture program in 1997. He is a founding member of the American Academy of Oral and Systemic Health, a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, a member of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, and a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, of which he is currently working on his fellowship.

    Craig is a member and past president of the Calgary and District Gnathological Society, and served on the board of the Calgary and District Dental Society. Currently he is a councilor on the council of the Alberta Dental Association and College. He also currently serves on the Disciplines committee of the Alberta Dental Association and College.

    Dr. Neetash Patel DC BSc

    Dr. Patel has worked his way across the globe and has found his way back home to Calgary in 2002. Combining his dedication to health, his love for travel and passion for life, he brings a unique and dynamic perspective to helping you achieve your health goals.

    Eliminating pain, restoring function and putting people back in control & maintaining their health are the mainstays of his treatment approach. Dr. Patel believes in learning as many things in life as possible and using them to their best advantage. Armed with knowledge from Chiropractic, Active Release, Acupuncture, nutrition, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, exercise & personal interests, Dr. Patel helps get his patients actively involved in life and their own health.

    A firm believer in living life by example, Dr. Patel has gained a reputation as a gym rat, kitchen guru and as someone who really gets the most out of life. Over the years, he has enthusiastically participated in adventure racing, triathlons and distance running completing a variety of distances in the racing world, including Ironman and 50km ultra runs. He donates his time and skill to many charitable events as community and world development is a priority in his life. Dr. Patel regularly contributes health & lifestyle articles for national magazines, started his own cooking school 2005 and is a published cookbook author & entrepreneur.

    A definite multi-tasker, Dr. Patel is passionate about education, in all aspects of life. He is currently on extended leave from post-secondary academic lecturing & teaches sustainable cooking & life skills to young, new parents. Dr. Patel is also an advisory board member for the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the TriCOPS charitable foundation.

    Dr. Patel believes in the simply philosophy that every day is another chance to be smarter, healthier, stronger and happier.

    Lars Gustafsson, Nutritionist, Entrepreneur, Founder-BodyMind Institute (CITCM Academic Advisor)

    Renowned for his compassionate and effective holistic coaching, and after years of demand, Lars created The BodyMind Nutrition Certification Program, and took his passion for comprehensive learning to an entirely new level in 2009, when he founded The BodyMind Institute, a virtual learning platform presenting the world’s leaders in natural health.

    An ever constant inspiration, Lars regularly offers interviews, speaking engagements, articles and one-on-one coaching.
